It was a banner start to the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships for Singapore as they claimed their first ever world victory defeating Kuwait 13-4 on the opening day of action. Singapore started solidly on offense building a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. Kuwait got on the board at the 2:58 mark of the second to bring the score to 3-1 in favor of Singapore. Singapore would tack on one more goal to lead at halftime 4-1. In the second half Singapore pulled away as they tallied seven third quarter goals to put themselves in perfect position for the win leading 11-3 headed to the fourth. Two more goals in the final frame and Singapore came away winners at 13-4.

Flash Quotes:
Singapore: "It was the first ever world win for Singapore so it is very good for the sport in Singapore and shows we are coming along. This is good preparation for the SEA (Southeast Asia) Games as most of our boys will play in that and Singapore has won it the last 42 years. But this was good, we are happy with the boy's commitment, the scoreboard shows it was good." -- Paul Oberman

The United States controlled the game from the beginning, jumping out to a 3-1 lead over Canada midpoint through the 1st quarter. US domination was underlined by a spectacular underwater backhand by Will Hindle-Katel, forcing the Canadian goaltender to dig deep into the net, ending the first quarter with the US leading by a comfortable 6-2 margin.

Canada 's game was a defensive struggle, allowing US shooters Jansen Wigo and Matt Sagehorn to light it up, widening the US lead to 12-7 at the half.

At the middle of the third quarter, Anthony Artukovic was the first to foul out with 3 ejections although the USA ended the quarter retaining the lead at 17-12. The historic rivalry of Canada and the USA was in evidence, with 24 total game ejections called, and a minor altercation in front of the goal.

Substituting for US starter Chay Lapin, goalie Andrew Stevens defended the honor of LMU with a strong fourth quarter in net, shutting down the Canadian attack with 4 saves.

Flash Quotes: Doug Peabody, head coach Team USA on the historic rivalry “It is great to play a strong, fast team that keeps playing strong through the entire game. Canada always fights hard and never gives up. This game was great preparation for our game against Croatia tomorrow night”

Team USA faces Croatia at the National Training Center in Los Alamitos at 7 PM Monday evening. This is an important game for both teams who are tied for 1st Place in Group B.

It was a frustrating result for Australia and a wonderful comeback for Greece that resulted in the two squads ending in a 7-7 tie. After the first quarter of play Australia appeared to be in control leading 3-0. Undaunted the Greeks would rally in the second frame to pull within 5-3 at the end of the first half. In the third quarter the Australian offense stalled while Greece was able to inch closer at 5-4 headed into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Greece tied the score just seconds into the frame to even things up at five. Australia would then surge ahead with consecutive goals to lead 7-5 with 4:43 remaining in the game. Greece would not be denied coming back with two scores, the last of which hit the net with just 18 seconds remaining on a man up advantage. Australia had one last chance to win the game but a final shot was denied by the Greek goaltender.

Serbia continued to roll along on day three of the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships as they snuffed out Japan 18-6. The Serbians set the tone early building a 6-1 lead after the first quarter of play. From there the onslaught continued as they pulled into halftime with an advantage of 10-2. In the third quarter Japan would toss in two goals of their own but that was overshadowed by five goals from Serbia and the score after three quarters was 15-4 in favor of Serbia. Finally in the last stanza Serbia put the game away with three more goals to move along winners at 18-6.

Flash Quotes:

Iran showed some great resiliency in their battle with New Zealand but was unable to come away with a win as New Zealand proved victorious 10-3 on day three of the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships. For New Zealand it was their first win in the tourney as they stand at 1-2 while Iran remains winless at 0-3 with both teams aligned in Group C. New Zealand opened the game effectively cashing in with five scores to just one by Iran for a 5-1 lead after the first. In the second Iran crept back into the fray with two straight scores to close to 5-3. New Zealand tacked on one more goal in the third and play headed to the fourth with Iran trailing 6-3. In the fourth quarter it was all New Zealand as they discarded any thoughts of defeat with three straight goals to pull out the win at 10-3.

Flash Quotes:
New Zealand: "We started really well, I was happy with the opening few minutes, but we stopped playing structured offense and we allowed the Iranians to come back into the game. We finished off reasonably well but for us there was too much of a big gap between playing good and playing bad. We have plenty to work on before we play Japan because we effectively had a lack of consistency (against Iran). " -- Kurt Goldsworthy

Germany took advantage of an undermanned less experienced Kuwait squad 30-2 on day three of the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships. The victory moves Germany to 2-1 while Kuwait falls to 0-3 in Group D play. It was a banner day for Tobias Gietz as he single handedly took out Kuwait with 13 goals of his own. Germany cruised from the start opening up a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and then doubling their pleasure up 14-0 at halftime. In the third quarter they rocketed their lead to 23-0. Finally in the fourth Kuwait broke through with two scores but it was all for naught as Germany came away the winners 30-2.

Flash Quotes:
Country: Kuwait: "We have young kinds here in their late teens and they are here to get good experience and to try and increase water polo in Kuwait. There is a big difference (between Kuwait and Germany) but we expected it and hopefully we can learn from it. It may look like a big loss but we win in experience" -- Eisa Alnashmi

The day of lopsided results rolled along at Long Beach State as Italy subdued Singapore 22-2 with Italy moving to 2-1 on the year while Singapore falls to 1-2 in Group D play. Italy started off hot and never looked back jumping out to a 6-0 lead after the end of the first quarter. By halftime things were no better for Singapore as they were in the hole 11-0. In the third quarter Singapore got on the board twice but it did not make a dent in the Italy attack as they led 16-2 after the third quarter. Finally in the fourth the Italians put the game away adding six more goals to cruise to the easy victory 22-2.

Flash Quotes:
Country: Italy: "A very easy game, but I respect Singapore water polo, but this was not a big challenge, but it is an important game in water polo development for Singapore" -- Pietro Ivaldi

Singapore: "If we don't have our heads switched on ready to play (this will happen), it was a very poor effort on our part. It was just basic skills and concentration. You can go into a game raring and ready to go but you have to have concentration. With a team like this you're gonna have your highs and lows and until you play consistent this is what will happen." -- Paul Oberman

Putting out an effort that by their own admission was deemed subpar was still enough for Hungary to overwhelm Argentina 20-6 on day three of the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships. The victory keeps Hungary perfect at 3-0 while Argentina drops to 1-2 in Group D play. The first quarter went swimmingly for the Hungarians as they skipped out to the 6-0 advantage. In the second quarter it was more of the same as they pulled into halftime leading 8-1. In the third quarter Argentina answered with two goals but Hungary still was in charge after three quarters 16-3. In the fourth they allowed three more Argentinian goals but it made no matter as the damage had been done and Hungary prevailed 20-6.

Flash Quotes:

Argentina: "The positive for us is to play in this game with Hungary. We think that Argentina do a good job and play a good game. We made alot of mistakes but we weren't hurt that much by our mistakes." -- Enrique Piedfort

The crowd of over 1200 rose to their feet at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos and clapped wildly chanting "U-S-A--U-S-A" as the clock wound down to zero on Team USA's third straight win, an 11-6 victory over Croatia. Now most everyone there knew it represented nothing more than a pool play victory in the early stages of the FINA 2007 Men's Junior World Championships, but for those in the stands and on the deck it felt like a whole lot more.

What began as a tense back and forth battle with four ties turned into a contest where the United States was able to pull away from a Croatian team they had failed to beat in two recent attempts this summer overseas. With the victory USA improved to 3-0 while Croatia falls to 2-1, and more importantly USA continued to pave the way for a perfect record in group play with two games looming, which can only benefit the squad down the road.

All the elements were there for Team USA tonight starting with goaltending and the play of Chay Lapin. Fittingly the game ended with the ball in the hands of Lapin who seemed to control it's movements all evening long. He tallied 18 total saves, few of the "cheap" variety, and reached his own personal goaltending zen which results in Lapin screaming "Get Out!" to potentials shots that come hurled at his cage. "I couldn't have asked for a better effort from Chay and my team," remarked USA Head Coach Doug Peabody.

Sure Lapin was aware he had brought a good game with him on this night, but what interested him more is what the victory accomplishes for this USA team, "It finally gives us confidence, just because we are USA and we are usually the underdogs," Lapin continued, "I came off a hard game and (tonight) I felt really focused and my defense helped," he concluded.

It was more than just Lapin as the offense seemed to get better as the game wore on led by four tallies off the hand of JW Krumpholz including his own personal hat trick during the third stanza. While Krumpholz had set up shop from four meters on in Jansen Wigo provided some fire power as well lighting the proverbial lamp on two occassions. And then there was the birthday boy Matthew Sagehorn who celebrated his 20 years with a score of his own which led to the crowd serenading him with a birthday tune.

There wasn't much this game didn't have including a dose of reality from all team USA players that while this win is important and memorable it's just one step in a long road to haul, "It feels great but we are just one step closer, it's just a bracket game and we gotta think about that," said Sagehorn. Lapin echoed those statements in regards to making too much of this victory, "we talked about that, we just take it game after game, we might meet up with them in the semis, this is just one stepping stone," stated Lapin.

Granted it was just a stepping stone, but for Team USA it was one nice step in the right direction on all fronts, "I think we did a job tonight being USA Water Polo," Peabody added as he then walked off to greet friends and family in the crowd of revelers knowing his group is right back in the pool tomorrow night against Puerto Rico where they get a shot to take another step.

Flash Quotes:
Country: USA: "I definitely think it sets a tone. I think we are an underdog but alot of teams were here tonight and saw the level we can play at" -- Matthew Sagehorn

Country: USA: "We won a bracket game and we have to keep that in mind" -- Doug Peabody

It was going to be a good day for one squad as Colombia and Mexico both entered day four of the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships with matching 0-3 records. Colombia left the pool deck with smiles after they edged Mexico 8-7 in a comeback effort. Colombia now moves to 1-3 while Mexico falls to 0-4 in Group A play. It was a great start for Mexico as they led 2-0 after the first quarter, however in the second Colombia rallied and Mexico held just a one goal lead at 4-3 after opening up the stanza with a three goal advantage. In the third Colombia completed their comeback tying the game at four and then again at five as action moved to the fourth. It was during the third that Assistant Coach Canal of Colombia was red carded after too much chatter with an official. In the fourth it was again back and forth with Colombia taking their first lead at 6-5 and then expanding to 7-5. Mexico rallied to come within a goal but would get no closer as a shot with just two seconds remaining to tie sailed to the left of the cage.

The first half was close with the two squads tied twice in the first quarter before Spain surged ahead 4-2 as played moved to the second. In the second quarter Spain extended their lead ever so slightly leading 6-3 at the half. In the third quarter their defense turned it up a notch pitching a shutout while the offense added on three more scores to lead 9-3 with the fourth quarter remaining. By that time this one was all but over as Slovakia could not rally from the large deficit and fell by a final score of 16-4.

Flash Quotes:
Country: Spain:  "This game was important for us for placement in group play, we played very good but the first round is not as important, the goal is to play on" -- Quim Colet

Slovakia:  "We had alot of opportunities but we did not use them, we shot a low percentage in 6 on 5 and we allowed too many counter attacks. It was the hardest match in our bracket and we played the worst we could. We have got two days to prepare for our (crossover) game, likely with Germany, to improve our weaknesses and get better." -- Jano Kuko

Flash Quotes:
Country: Brazil:  "I am very happy because we started losing 6-2 and we comeback, the recovery was good. Of course (we have momentum) we come back with a result and now we have to come back to beat Mexico to finish third in the group, we are already in the top 16, this is good" -- Joao Felipe, Attacker

Egypt:  "We are fighting through some injuries and we are disappointed we lost. We hope to regroup and play our best game tomorrow because today was not our best effort." -- Ahmed Moharem, Captain

Match Report:
Japan held all the cards and was more economical in shooting. Shot were
channelled back to goalkeeper Tanamura, who made 17 saves, the second
highest haul of the competition. Japan went better on extra but looked the
better team in the water. It took until nearly 90 seconds into the second
half for the Kiwis to score their first goal. They managed to get the game
back to 4-3 two minutes into the third but Japan took the three-goal
advantage at the break to four just after the restart. The void was too much
for New Zealand to bridge.

Argentina and Singapore mixed it up on day four of the 2007 FINA Men's Junior World Championships and a for a little while it appeared as if upstart Singapore might claim victory and a spot in the top 16. Unfortunately for the crew from Singapore that would prove not to be the case as they watched an early lead evaporate in the hot California sun and fell to Argentina 10-9. The loss drops Singapore to 1-3 while Argentina evens up at 2-2. Singapore jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter but in the second Argentina mounted their rally. By the time the dust settled at halftime Argentina was in front 6-5. In the third quarter Argentina kept Singapore at bay holding an 8-6 lead as played moved to the fourth quarter. In the fourth Singapore rallied closing to within 10-9 with just 1:41 showing on the game clock, however there would be more scoring after that and a Singapore exclusion with just four seconds left effectively sealed the deal.

Flash Quotes:
Country: Argentina:  "The best feelings in this match is that with the win Argentina is in the top 16. I was very nervous at the end and today we made mistakes because players were nervous. In the future we don't feel as nervous because of the experience of this game and how important it was." -- Enrique Piedfort

Singapore:  "We played with heart, we played with pride. We knew if we won what we would have achieved, but we are newcomers to the world stage. We have to be more clinical about how you put the ball away, legs in the right spot, all the little things. I'm still happy to be the coach of this team, we came from nowhere and it's good just one goal from being in the top 16." -- Paul Oberman

The day of comebacks rolled along at Long Beach State as Canda was the latest squad to hold an early lead only to see it vanish like a desert mirage. France was able to regroup and down Canada 14-10 after falling behind 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. In the second France and Canada dueled back and forth with Canada still maintaining a lead at halftime 7-6. In the third the tide changed for the Canadians as the French finally seized control going up 9-8 with 3:08 remaining in the period. The game would come tied at nine, but France would take a 10-9 lead with just five second remaining in the third quarter. As play began in the fourth France built their lead to two goals in the opening minute with a score to go up 11-9. Canada would cut it to 11-10, but France responded with three straight goals to come away victorious at 14-10.

Match Report:
Hungary completely outplayed Germany, who seemed listless and lacking
in anyinspiration to play. Hungary practised man-down defence for much of the
second half and elected to send a man up front in the setting sun.
Hungaryinvariably stole the ball or blocked the shot and passed down the pool
forthe forward scout to score. German players were frustrated on the bench
butin the water there seemed a lack of effort made for a frustrating game
towatch. Germany took only four shots in the final quarter. Hungary¹s
defencewas awesome and the vast array of unguarded shots was breathtaking. No
wonder Hungary is top of the group with a clean sheet.

Croatia shrugged off a tough loss to the United States last night by hammering Jamaica 26-1 in the final game of the day at Long Beach State. This one was never in doubt as Croatia rolled out to a 7-0 lead. From their they kept the pedal to the metal racing out to a 14-1 lead by halftime. The gluttony of goals continued in the third quarter as Jamaica had no answering allowing eight more balls to enter the cage. In the fourth Croatia called off the dogs only putting in four goals en route to the 26-1 win. Croatia moves to 3-1 in Group B play while Jamaica falls to 0-4.

the smallest players in the pool if not in the tournament in Bayou, who is
the team¹s youngest player. The win gave the USA four straight and just
