WOMEN'S SPORTS FOUNDATION HONORS SLIPPERY ROCK ATHLETES & COACH
SLIPPERY ROCK, PA (April 11, 2007) – The Women’s Sports Foundation announced Monday it will honor three Slippery Rock University women’s athletic teams, 12 individual female student-athletes and one Rock head coach for their role in helping SRU attain gender equity in its athletic program.
The group of SRU women will receive the Foundation’s second “Geena Takes Aim” national resolution during a ceremony Tuesday, April 10, at approximately 9 p.m. at Luigi’s Restaurant in Slippery Rock.
Joanne Tosti-Vasey, president of PA NOW (National Organization of Women) Inc., will present plaques bearing the resolution to the SRU women’s field hockey, swimming and water polo teams.
Individual plaques bearing the resolution will also be presented to SRU student-athletes Rachael Bienias (Tinley Park, Ill.), Emily Campbell (Mechanicsburg), Elizabeth Choike (Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.), Alison Nicole Nuckols (Midlothian, Va.), Elizabeth Penning (Woodbridge, Va.), Sarah Sander (Loveland, Ohio), Laura Sanford (Stevensville, Md.), Ashley Stoner (Harrisburg), Jessica Student (Drexel Hill), Jennifer Venet (Mechanicsburg), Heather Walbright (Worthington, Ohio) and Rebecca Zinn (Dillsburg) and Rock head swimming/water polo coach Jim Yeamans.
The “Geena Takes Aim” resolution is named for former Foundation trustee, women’s rights advocate and award-winning actor Geena Davis and honors individuals and/or groups who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment in pursuit of gender equity, civil rights and social justice in sport.
The Women’s Sports Foundation was founded in 1974 by Billie Jean King and is a national charitable educational organization seeking to advance the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity
