2017 CIFSS D3 Thread

Postby caliwaterpolo » Mon Jul 17, 2017 5:56 pm

I honestly have no clue with these predictions with the playoff format outside of the top division so I'll just say what teams I think will be strong contenders and why. Other can fill in the blanks.

Burroughs and Royal won Divisions last year and return some players.

Woodbridge was young and talented last year.

I'm guessing Righetti and La Serna will be in the mix.

Not sure what Beckman is bringing back, but they've been solid the last few years.

This is a 32-team bracket with 36 teams, so Los Al and Servite can still make the playoffs if they don't finish in playoff positions in league depending on their non-league schedule.

Gun to my head, I'll say Woodbridge as CIF champs with that group of Socal players.

Righetti and Dos Pueblos stand out to me, but just a guess

Because I'm a nerd, here's a top ten going into the season using CIF's power ranking system that placed the teams in all their divisions. In order, with their power ranking number:

1. Righetti 10.57
2. Crespi 9.97
3. Dos Pueblos 9.91
4. Villa Park 9.83
5. Los Alamitos 9.79
6. Riverside Poly 9.72
7. Troy 9.71
8. La Serna 9.53
9. Vista Murrieta 9.34
10. Costa Mesa 9.24

My 1.3 cents:
Righetti might be top 10, but I don't see them in the playoff semis.
My hunch is that Vista Murrieta and Costa Mesa aren't top 10 teams, but it's just a hunch.
Burroughs, Royal and Beckman probably belong on this list, but I have no idea where.
I know nothing about Woodbridge, but if they are loaded with SOCAL players, then I'm sure they'll be a contender.
#4 through #8 all seem to put out competitive teams every year, so I like them in the top 10. Villa Park was regularly ranked top 10 in D2 last year, Riv. Poly went to semis in D3 last year, and La Serna is just pretty consistently competitive.

I don't know enough about Dos Pueblos or Troy to comment, and know zip about Crespi.

Will be interesting to see how the final rankings compare to this power ranking system. Whatever happens, with D1 locked up by 3 or 4 teams and D2 kinda weird, I think D3 will be an exciting division to watch this year. Good luck to everyone!

I am going to pull out my crystal ball with what I think based upon the information I have. These are guesstimates and I am far from perfect, so here goes.

1. Righetti 10.57 - Moved down from Div 1 (should of never moved them to Div 1), lost GK and 6 seniors. Team should be in the mix. Have a history of playing at the top.
2. Crespi 9.97 - Stayed in Div 3, lost in 1st rd, was 21-9 in 2016, Lost GK, 8 sr's
3. Dos Pueblos 9.91 - Moved from Div 2, lost in 1st round, was .500 team in 2016, don't know much about them.
4. Villa Park 9.83 - Moved down from Div 2, lost in 1st round, about a .500 team in 2016
5. Los Alamitos 9.79 - Moved down from Div 2, sub .500 team in 2016. I would not think a contender
6. Riverside Poly 9.72 - Stayed in Div 2, lost in semis, rtn all-cifer play, lost all-cif player, was 26-5 in 2016. Should be in the mix.
7. Troy 9.71 - Stayed in Div 3, lost in 2nd rd, Rtn 1 all-cif, lost GK, lost 7 sr's 20-9 in 2016
8. La Serna 9.53 - Stayed in Div3, lost in 2nd rnd, rtn 1 all-cif, RTN GK lost 5 Sr's, 21-10 in 2016
9. Vista Murrieta 9.34 - Stayed in Div 3, lost GK, lost 5 SR's, 20-10 in 2016
10. Costa Mesa 9.24 - Stayed in Div 3 - lost in 1st rnd, lost several key players, 22-8 in 2016.

Some other notable teams:
Burroughs/Burbank - Moved up from Div 5, won cif in 2016 in Div 5. Return 3-4 ALL-VIF players including GK, 25-6 in 2016. Team to watch
Woodbridge - Stayed in Div 3, lost in 1st round, rtn all of their varsity minus one starter, 17-13 in 2016. This team is loaded with some strong sophomores that will only make this team better - team to watch.
Royal - Moved up from Div 4 where they won the CIF title. Rtn an ALL-CIF player, but lost their GK and 1 All-Cif player. Should be a team to watch

I don't think Beckman, Troy will be factors in 2017.

jlweath, great recap, and with the added color of records, seniors lost and all-CIFers! That wasn't a quick task.

So your rough watch-list is Righetti, Riverside Poly, Burroughs, Woodbridge, Royal. I buy that. Still wondering about Villa Park...anyone know their situation, how many seniors they lost, etc.?

I could not find much about their returning players, but here are their results from the Calif HS Championships, where they finished 37th out of 48 teams.

The finished with a 3-3 record. Here's a recap
- Lost to Loyola (12th place) 15-3
- Lost to San Ramon Valley (21th team) 2-13
- Beat Clovis (43rd team) 15-6
- Lost to San Clemente (35th) 6-7
- Beat Yorba Linda (40th ) 12-2
- Beat Servite (38th) 16-8

Righetti finished 36 and Los Alamitos finished 33 as the only other Div 3 teams, I could find in there. So VP, Los Al and Righetti finished fairly close to each other in that tournament. I do not know if they all had their full teams, but based on that and very limited information, I would revise my thinking on Righetti and say they may not be in the hunt.

Link to teams to watch - It looks like they just used the Pre-season power ranking to generate the list.

I was looking at some scores on the CIF SS site and I saw that there was a tournament (Long Beach Poly) this last weekend. I also saw that Burroughs lost like 2 or 3 games, which surprised me. I have not seen any information on the tournament.

That is surprising. I noticed that Servite beat Edison in overtime, with Servite's center (Ocasio, from US Cadet Team) scoring 7 goals. They weren't on my radar, but maybe they should be? Ocasio is very very good for his age.

REV and Riverside Poly had a game scheduled this week (to October) which would have been a good barometer for both teams, even though Poly is D3 and REV is D1/D2. REV has a talented core that is mostly composed of juniors, including McMurtry, a strong player at ODP Championships. Poly has their US Cadet goalie, and their all-CIF returning leftie, plus some other good young guys.

Link to the Burroughs/south Pasadena game on Aug 29 which Burroughs barely won 13/12. Burroughs has already lost 3 games.

D1/2 Palos Verdes beat Troy 21-6 yesterday. As a comparison to last season, PV won by 1 goal. Troy appears to be rebuilding as Jlweath suggested.

I did not see this score from Tuesday, Aug 29th between Woodbridge (Div 3) vs San Clemente (Div 1/2). It was a close game with SC winning 14-12 at SC. Woodbridge was missing their 2M defender and lost one of their starters due to injury during the game.

Ayala 17 vs. Troy 6. I didn't see the game scheduled on CIFSS or Maxprep. I wasn't at the game, but got the score from a friend.
