Water Polo Tough Rant

Postby desertbeachkid » Wed Nov 18, 2020 8:27 pm

Let me preface this rant by first saying I'm in a crappy mood because my kid's school district just cancelled all athletic practices. Apparently swimming in separate lanes and passing a ball six feet apart in a chlorinated pool is unsafe. Whatever. I digress. Lately I've been inundated on my YouTube and Instagram feeds with USAWP's "Water Polo Tough" campaign. For the life of me, I don't understand the point of this. Are they trying to bring new kids to water polo when clubs aren't even practicing? Are they trying to amuse us? Get us excited about the summer olympics? Please explain. I simply cannot understand how paying the blue chip advertising company Saatchi & Saatchi for this campaign makes any sense. Maybe instead of shooting YouTube spots of Maggie and Ashley pretending to diffuse a bomb while eggbeatering, USAWP could create some valuable educational content. Why not have the Olympic coaches breakdown some game tape? Or go over various defenses? Brian Flacks pushed out some great educational video content over the summer. Would be nice to see USAWP finding ways to help its athletes continue to learn the game and improve even when they can't play. Or maybe USAWP could come up ideas for a modified version of the game where kids can safely distance? Surely, in the midst of a global pandemic, they can do better than having Cupido and Hooper dressed as Spinal Tap, eggbeatering and playing electric guitars. No, USAWP, this one most definitely does go to eleven.

This is crazy. Yes, it is not 100% safe but the chance of transmission seems to be quite low and no physical activity is even more damaging.

I watched the first episode...dumb.

Glad I havent been a USAWP member for several years now, I’d hate to think that was what my dues paid for.

For what it’s worth, I know that these ads were filmed well before Covid-19 and any shutdowns. Not defending anything else about them or their release, but I can say that they were created before all this madness.

Thats good to know - that they were created before covid. I think USAWP struggles with its social media appeal to the younger crowds. Grep Mescall does an excellent job with all his interviews and interactions, but I think that audience is older fans, parents, coaches - not the U10-18 crowd. I love the work Jonathan Joei (2018 JOs for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNhHRI-FENU). Having hype videos for tournaments on different platforms would be great.
