6-8 Invitational Showcase tourney livestream

6-8 Academy (Azevedo) is hosting a HS Invitational Showcase tourney this weekend at SMU in Dallas. Teams were seeded yesterday based on 6-8 Challenge Results, with 4 teams of 8-9 players. About half northern CA players, a quarter southern CA, and a quarter from rest of country (TX, IL, UT, FL, OR, Canada). Lots of 2019 dev/cadet national team talent, mostly sophomores and juniors.

6-8 Azevedo just showed us all a path forward. The tournament they hosted at SMU this past weekend was significantly more competitive than an ODP National Championships, with four very equal girls' teams that played 5 games in 3 days with average goal differential of 2. 8-9 kids per team, tons of playing time. Every player was D1 level, more than half at NTSC+ level, and a quarter travel National Team level. Teams were created onsite, so the teams hadn't ever played together, but who cares? It was real water polo. Covid tested, temperature checked, masked and distanced. No reports of outbreaks so far, fingers crossed.

Hopefully we see an event like this every month or two going forward. But we need similar events for the players newer to the sport, where losing 2 years out of a 5 year career would make the difference between playing and not playing in college. If we don't do this, recruiting classes will run dry, and athletic directors will start canceling programs. Polo is already under assault, with admissions and sex abuse scandals, and a population CA-centric and white/wealthy.

So - if you're a parent, consider sending your athlete to the next event like this. If you're a CA club director or high school, encourage your players to attend. If you're a TX/UT/FL/CT club director or university coach, do the same, or better yet, consider helping host an event.

It's bit strange that they did not hold this even in an outdoor pool. I know it gets cold in December, but there are outdoor pools in parts of Texas that are decent weather right?

If you want to talk about science, I’m not sure it matters when it comes to pools. Indoors or outdoors, they appear to be a pretty safe environment.

That article mentions nothing about Water Polo at all. Swimmers, swimming laps in their own lanes, is not comparable to Water Polo at all, and @retiredguy knows that.

I doubt we will hear if there was any spread at the 68 Showcase, but I certainly hope there was not. If they are being transparent it would be a great example of how this could be done safely. FTR, Tony and some families appeared to arrive in Texas via private plane (as documented on their social media accounts) and were probably not staying at the local Best Western. So any experiences at this showcase may not be typical to your average tournament.
