wplover,

First of all, congratulations to your son on being selected to a Pacific Zone yeam for ODP Championship. There are many good Pacific zone players in the 2001-2002 age bracket so it is quite an accomplishment. College coaches do come to watch Youth ODP Chamionship games, especially the semis and medal games, so your son will be able to showcase his talents. I have not seen the 2018 ODP rosters but I will go out on a limb and conjecture that Pacific Red team is going to be one of the two favorites to win the Championship and Pacific Blue will be a contender with a shot at the final four. This is of course assuming that many of elite Pacific zone players have participated in the ODP selection process.

I am not sure that attending a public school is that big of a disadvantage. After all, many many excellent Division 1 players came out of Miramonte, Campolindo, Acalanes, SRV, Drake, Menlo-Atherton, Gunn, to name just a few excellent public water polo programs. Playing on a better/bigger club might help in a sense that most college coaches tend to watch Platinum Division games at the NJO/ KAP7 more often. Still, it is not a deal breaker, imho.

P.S. Could you please post Pacific Youth ODP rosters if you have them?

I think rosters for those zones with two teams are still waiting to be broken down into their Red and Blue teams.

Thanks for the response, I value the advice here.

I will post the rosters when they are finalized, it's correct they have not been set between PAC red and blue.

ODP can make a difference for kids that don't play on top HS or club teams. Since your son is already playing for a top club, ODP is just another way for your son to get seen. Make sure he emails coaches before the games and gives them info on when he is playing and cap number. If he's a junior, he should introduce himself to the coaches too. If he makes NTSC that can help him break through the recruiting pile too. There's a handful of players that all the coaches want. For everyone else, it's about being persistent (and polite) about trying to get coaches to watch your tape or see you play. My one word of caution about ODP is that the system they run (at least in the past) tends to highlight certain players. When my kid did it, it was all about press defense, counter-attacking, 6 on 5, and getting the ball into set -- virtually no zone defense or driving. This is great if you are a center defender, a set, or one of the designated 6 on 5 shooters. But if you are not one of those players, your opportunities to shine can be really limited (a steal and counter).

I guess the games take place next week in NorCal.

I just took a quick gander at the entire list of team/participants for this years ODP National Championship Zone Teams taking place next weekend. Unlike in years past, ODP has "really" (emphasis added) spread the wealth around. Because of this, there simply isn't a way to pick which zone team (including the North, South, East and West "All Star Teams") on who will come out on top of the 20 team field. Furthermore, NL is going on at the same time and apparently at the same pools. Next weekend should be an interesting mosh-pit of waterpolo in the Pleasanton/Livermore area.

"All-Star Teams" in order 1.) South 2.) North 3.) West 4.) *East *Interesting to note that East beat South yesterday 16-5. Sure would like to know the story on what happened there.

Also, Pac Red and the San Diego area boys are in the Youth final. Nice to see SD making their presence known again.
