shoulder injuries - and technique differences

Postby palmyra » Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:19 am

Hello,

first of all, please forgive if this has been covered and I failed (as a newbie on here) to properly do my digging amongst previous forum entries...
Thinking of the 'typical' situations of various rotator cuff & tendon problems in generically speaking "swimmers' shoulder" nightmare... and considering a few key technique differences between long-distance swimmers and water polo players - do latter have much reduced chances of these (slowly developing) conditions affecting them in the long run? Assuming that transition from former sport to latter happens early enough.
I might be completely wrong, and clearly not speaking from a medical background- but was just discussing with some that e.g. (proportionally anyway less utilized) breaststroke in its modern 'undulating' form, and front-crawl with essentially different body angle might be actually quite beneficial to avoid the long-term curse that can affect some swimmers. Assuming also a comparison of like with like, e.g same hand entry on front-crawl (with or then without the extra twist on shoulder to enter thumb first vs. flat). Thanks in advance for any thoughts and/or data.

Hello palmyra,

I do not know the answer to your question.

I will look into it and will get back here to post anything I find.

Thank you for the question,

Hello,
many thanks for looking into this. It's just a long-running (but mild) debate with two 'aquatic' friends (all of us technical rather than medically informed people), so I very much appreciate you making time for the topic.
The general internet has proven to be surprisingly lacking in trustworthy comparisons/studies.
Kind regards,
P.
