Re: Jovan Vavic Arrested
Read through much of this, could someone link the Loyola payments, by the way Heinel had quite a racket going.
I have the answer for all of this, at these schools set aside10 to 25 spots to the highest bidder, use the money to pay for deserving kids who can’t afford it
Daniel Klatt is my suggestion

If i’m The new prez, I think I would look outside the family. Same for when Swann goes.

I agree they should, but they can’t help themselves. Swann was a horrible choice.Polodad wrote:If i’m The new prez, I think I would look outside the family. Same for when Swann goes.

Zero. But that’s not beacuse of the scandal. It’s because the new coach gets to hire their own staff.oh c'mon wrote:What are the odds that any of the current water polo coaches on both sides are retained after women's season concludes?
Brandon Brooks didn’t leave UCLA from scandal. You see any of his assistants rehired for Wright’s staff?

This isn't completely correct. All aid is counted unless it is exempted (which all need-based aid is). For example, the "employee dependent tuition benefit" has a stipulation, and for equivalency sports specifically, there are extra requirements for academic aid to be exempted.TCoach wrote:Just to clarify the questions about scholarships and aid:
Institutional financial aid does not count towards the athletic scholarship limit unless it is based on 1) athletic ability and/or 2) is aid from USOC or USAWP.
Here is the Bylaw (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/bylawView?id=8804) bolding is by me
"15.5.3.2 Equivalency Computations. In equivalency sports, each institutional financial aid award (per Bylaw 15.02.5.2) to a counter shall be computed as follows: (Revised: 1/10/90, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, 4/29/04 effective 8/1/04, 10/20/08, 1/17/15 effective 8/1/15)
(a) Once a student becomes a counter, the institution shall count all institutional aid (per Bylaw 15.02.5.2) received up to the value of a full grant-in-aid. Exempted government grants per Bylaw 15.2.5 and exempted institutional aid per Bylaw 15.02.5.4 specifically are excluded from this computation."
Employee dependent tuition benefits are covered in the definition of institutional aid (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/bylaw?ruleId=4226):
"15.02.5.2 Institutional Financial Aid. The following sources of financial aid are considered to be institutional financial aid: (Revised: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 10/31/02 effective 8/1/03, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)
(a) All funds administered by the institution, which include but are not limited to the following:
(1) Scholarships;
(2) Grants;
(3) Tuition waivers;
(4) Employee dependent tuition benefits, unless the employee has been employed as a full-time faculty/staff member for a minimum of five years;
(5) Loans.
(b) Aid from government or private sources for which the institution is responsible for selecting the recipient or determining the amount of aid, or providing matching or supplementary funds for a previously determined recipient."
Note they specify you have to be an employee for five years to prevent convenient hiring of parents.
For equivalency sports, academic merit aid can only be exempted if the student-athlete meets certain academic requirements. Here is the bylaw (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/byla ... 249#result):
"15.5.3.2.4 Exceptions.
15.5.3.2.4.1 Academic Honor Awards -- Based on High School Record. Academic honor awards that are part of an institution’s normal arrangements for academic scholarships, based solely on the recipient’s high school record and awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, are exempt from an institution’s equivalency computations, provided the recipient was ranked in the upper 10 percent of the high school graduating class or achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.500 (based on a maximum of 4.000) or a minimum ACT sum score of 105 or a minimum SAT score of 1200 (critical reading and math) for SAT tests taken before March 1, 2016; or a minimum SAT score of 1270 (critical reading and math) for tests taken on or after March 1, 2016, based on the concordance determined by the College Board. (Adopted: 1/12/99 effective 8/1/99, Revised: 1/14/08 effective 8/1/08, 1/16/10 effective 8/1/10, 2/2/16)"

No. 63 is pretty damning for the program. NCAA is almost definitely going to come down with some sanctions on the USC water polo program.desertbeachkid wrote:See link below. Look at Allegation No. 65 on p. 11.keepingitpolo wrote:Read through much of this, could someone link the Loyola payments

I’m gonna guess that they will hold themselves out for 3 years similar to UCSB rather than wait for the NCAA to drop the hammer.pietro michele wrote:No. 63 is pretty damning for the program. Re: Jovan Vavic Arrested
Yeah I think self sanctions are the first move. But they probably lose scholarship(s) and other privileges(recruiting, etc), and possibly give back recent titles too imo. Unfortunate for the athletes, but the coaches and admin know the rules, and the athletes also do know the reputation and past actions of the admin before they choose to attend. Not saying the athletes deserve punishment but they are surely less surprised about this impropriety compared to say the Stanford polo players would be, I think that much is obvious.retiredguy wrote:I’m gonna guess that they will hold themselves out for 3 years similar to UCSB rather than wait for the NCAA to drop the hammer.pietro michele wrote:No. 63 is pretty damning for the program. Just read that USC interim President is announcing they are going to expel all students admitted that are involved in the allegations, including Lori Loughlin’s daughter, who found out about the indictment while on spring break in the Bahamas, aboard a USC Board of Trustees private yacht.
From coaches to ADs to trustees to doctors to Presidents. The stink runs deep.

Re: Jovan Vavic Arrested
Thanks for posting this. Reading through it all and the level of detail, I will be shocked if Vavic and the Associate AD don't negotiate a plea deal and cooperate. It is amazing to see this goes back to 2012-2013 with Vavic. This is similar timing to the USC Soccer coaches. One dot that hasn't been connected is Bill Ferguson, Women's Volleyball Coach, was also arrested in this operation. Ferguson was the USC Men's Volleyball coach from 2007-2015. With this fraudulent activity centered in Southern California, it isn't a big leap to wonder if Ferguson started this activity while at USC. What I think USC needs to worry about is that further investigation/cooperation by those accused could reveal that this wasn't one rogue coach but up to four coaches over an extended period of time coupled with the Associate AD. Will be hard for the NCAA not to see that in a much more negative light. I do feel bad for the Men and Women on the team as their hard work and dedication to their sport is evident. However when the NCAA comes down on programs the current players at the school often take a big part of the punishment warranted or not.Rbpolo0414 wrote:I think the Loyola payments were different. A check was made out to USC water polo from one of the parents and it was classified as a donation by the school. How does that not help the program.desertbeachkid wrote:Vavic used this money to pay for his kids' high school tuition. That has zero to do with helping his team win. So please let's not try to cast a noble veneer over his criminal conduct. And BTW, that's not speculation or jumping to a conclusion. It's a fact based on clear cut evidence set forth in the indictment. I'm withholding judgment on the USC water polo program, but there is no need to withhold judgment on Vavic. He did it. He is going to plead guilty. And he will have no choice but to be completely honest with the Feds about everything. If he has any stories to tell about the USC Athletics Department, it is going to come out (and note that I said "if"). You simply cannot fight the Feds.Rbpolo0414 wrote:If he takes a plea bargain more stuff will come out. I’m not sure how far they will dig, but they will get into why he did it and who it benefitted. I don’t believe for one minute he did this to make more money. I believe he did this to help his coaches and to ultimately help him win. Also, who else at the University knew about it or helped him. Of course he could fall on the sword. Not to mention USC is going to start digging as will the NCAA. I’m sure things will come out that many know about but have looked the other way.
Have a look at page 125. https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-conte ... avit-3.pdf
1. USC WP paid directly
2. Loyola paid directly
3. Assistant coaches allegedly paid directly
2 of those 3 pieces of evidence helped the program.

The NCAA is feckless when it comes down to seriously sanctioning big time revenue-producing sports (UNC Basketball and Penn State Football). Since no revenue-producing sports are involved at USC in this case, no doubt the NCAA will use this as an opportunity to pound their chests and show how tough they are.

Of course he did it for the money.... You think he is an Altruistic guy who wanted to make the difference in the World? It was all Ego, Greed, showing up UCLA who hired Guy Baker instead of him, the immigrant journey, and helping his kids get a free education at Loyola and SC & become the stars of the SC WP teams.. Between 4 Kids it's over $1mm for a 4 year SC education in addition to all the perks of travel, training table , without counting the $30k+ year Loyola tuition. Did you miss the part, that his son's Loyola Education was paid for by the Newport Beach Shyster Singer via some Privileged Hedge Fund Manager from Pimco, Hollywood Stars, Private Equity Partner, or wanna-be- Fashion Mogul to get their kid into SC and on top of that get a tax write- off for donating to a charity to help disadvantaged youths.

Re: Jovan Vavic Arrested
Since there is evidence that this goes back to 2012, there is no telling how far back it really goes. And, since this 'coach' was willing to knowingly cheat the system for his own benefit, what else did he cheat at or allow to happen in the name of 'glory' or a win? He clearly embraced a culture of deception in the name of sport. It disgusts me, as sport is meant to be fair and potentially the only level playing field many athletes get to play on. This criminal tarnished that venue and has no honor. He has to take responsibility for putting the program at risk for his own personal gain.ItsaCaliforniaGame wrote:Of course he did it for the money....
