Women's Water Polo

Thanks to Doru for his well-documented and highly-informative article about the successes of our USA women's water polo program. As one who was in on the ground floor 50 years ago, I can tell you, first, how difficult it was in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s to get most men (and some women) interested ...

Re: Old guys!

As a followup, Art Kelley was an All-American in Masters swimming when he was in his 60s. I think he ranked No. 1 nationally one year in his age group in the 400-meter IM. Returning to water polo, Alan Stiffelman from St. Louis, who's now in his mid 60s, continues to practice diligently and compete ...

Re: Old guys!

For those who might not know, the writer of the previous comment, Art Kelley, aka exholeguard, was indeed one of the best hole guards in the country during the 1960s and 1970s while playing for St. Louis teams that won the YMCA Nationals and placed as high as 2nd at the AAU Nationals. Good to hear f...

Re: Way to go, Ladies!

Yes, congrats to our National Women's Team for their gold medal victory in China, and thanks to Doc and Joan and others at WPP for posting the daily reports on the Women's World League Super Finals last week and the Men's World League Super Finals this week. If you didn't take time to watch the wome...

Re: Partying at ODP Training

Not sure how traveling to Hawaii meshes with the partying topic, but did you know it was 40 years ago, in 1974, that some of us talked the Hawaiians into adding a women's category to their summer invitational? Charlie Dwight was head of the Hawaiian water polo contingent, and he made it possible. I,...

Re: Riverside FINA tournament: No Female announcers?

FYI, 2012 Olympian Tumua Anae is scheduled to serve as the color commentator for the Sat. games. Other ladies have been asked by Greg Mescall to help out, but were unavailable. From here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, I watched the USA vs. Canada game on Thursday night and felt it was w...

Re: Newland speaks his mind at USWP Banquet

I believe he coached USA men's teams at the Pan-Am Games and the World University Games in the 1970s and led USA teams on international trips to half-a-dozen other countries in the 1980s and 1990s.

Re: Newland speaks his mind at USWP Banquet

I wasn't at the Hall of Fame ceremonies, so I can only observe from far away, here on the East Coast. But I'd like to repeat, first of all, the familiar statement that "growin' old ain't for sissies." I'm 81, and I know whereof I speak. Family members and good friends pass away. There's ph...

Re: Newland speaks his mind at USWP Banquet

As Theodore Roosevelt once said, "No one cares how much you know unless they know how much you care." Coach Newland has co-published a 233-page book with one of his athletes, Bill Leach, entitled "Circle of Success." I find that it contains many snippets of good advice about Spor...

Re: Deja Vu, All Over Again

Hey, calm down, Doru and fan400. We're all on the same team here, aren't we? I've enjoyed reading what both of you have written on this thread and on other WPP threads. I agree with your statement on another thread, fan400, that "all sports are political," and I agree with your statement o...

Doru, you mentioned landing in New York City many years ago and looking for a place to play water polo. So you may be interested in the following article which appeared in Boys Life magazine in 1964 ... http://www.americanwaterpolo.org/stories/water-polo-historian-chuck-hines-recalls-the-sport-s-pas...

Re: Deja Vu, All Over Again

Thanks, Doru, for your input. For those interested in the history of U.S. water polo, both Water Polo Planet and American Water Polo have posted various articles. I hope to condense these articles, over 50 altogether, into a single document entitled History later this year. In the meantime, I highly...

Deja Vu, All Over Again

Let me say I appreciate Doru Roll's efforts to promote and publicize water polo. He often writes informatively about the sport. But his article on March 1, entitled Deja Vu, All Over Again, is not entirely accurate. He prefaces his statements about what happened in the past, in the 1960s/70s/80s, by...

Re: Penn State NCAA Sanctions

Our various opinions about the Penn State situation are next to meaningless. What's done is done, from the horrid acts of the past to the retribution of the present. The question is this: what is each one of us doing today, every day, to make the world a better, safer place, from the streets of Anah...
