CCS 2016 Thoughts

Postby Allstar21 » Fri Aug 26, 2016 3:39 pm

Does anyone have any sort of read on CCS this year? D1/D2? Sleeper teams? Players to watch?

D1
Bell- keeps goalie and 2 key starters, lose a lot
SF- keeps goalie and a few key younger players but lost a bunch of big bodies
MA- returns goalie and 16u jo mvp, but lose almost everyone else
Leland- graduate a lot, return a few key players
Gunn- Lost 2 huge bodies but return everything in between

D2
Santa Cruz- lose 4 key guys but return a good amount too
Soquel- lost goalie and lefty, retrned every other key player
Menlo- lose 2 huge players but return everyone else
SHP- only lost their key lefty and even have a replacement lefty, this team returns so much talent that they can keep up with most socal teams
VC- don't now too much personally about this team but did hear that this is the year they have been waiting for

Bells got a cadet national team transfer hole set who's very good but I don't know who will take up the other spots

That will give bell a huge advantage, I'd say they're number one In d1, but probably still not at the level shp is at. Adding that big center allows bell to have their two big shooters stay up top, and they aren't the type of players you would wanna drop on at all.

Will this year's D1 final be pretty similar to last years (St. Francis vs. Bellarmine)? Or, will there be an upset team lurking? I don't know if MA or maybe even Serra have the wherewithal to do it, but those are the only ones I could even picture beating St. Francis/ Bell. Leland and Gunn just don't seem complete enough to win against them.I heard Gunn/ Leland both lost their goalies and both teams only have 1-2 really legitimately good players.

It's a toss up between Bell, Gunn, and SF. Bell and SF have the advantage of competing in a strong league, which will help them improve over the season. Gunn's league is weak so their challenge will be to figure out a way to stay in shape and improve over the season.

Wow. Don't know the story with St Francis, but they lost 8-2 to Bellarmine today in league play. Note that the Bell transfer cannot play until 10/1. Next week against Valley Christian should be interesting.

Bellarmine seems very solid coming off of a senior heavy year. Seems like Coach Mello has done a pretty good job using as much talent as he could so far.I didn't personally see the game, but I would assume, given the score, that the stereotypical conditioning of the Bells really gave them that edge over Saint Francis. Valley will certainly be interesting as they have some good shooters and a solid goalie. The conditioning will probably be the largest factor as well in this game.

Moving away from the WCAL, any news on the PAL, or the SCVAL?

CCS WCAL D1 finals I think will be Bellarmine vs. St. Francis or MA. Bell lost many talented seniors last year, but have a lot of young talent and 2 strong senior shooters. (Plus a well conditioned deep bench.) Both SFHS and MA have several strong players (from Stanford Water Polo Club) and are well coached. Players to watch: SFHS - Puentes, Lozinski, Viollier. BCP - White, Wang, Rethans, Kirk, Discipulo, Kujawa. MA - Smith, Caryotakis.

Great game last night - Serra vs St Francis - tight game all the way. SF 12 Serra 11. Serra missed a shot from 7 meters with 2 seconds left. Fun to watch. Arvin Bahia for Serra is a very good player - scored six of the 11 Serra goals. Their starting lineup is 2 Seniors and 5 Juniors (very balanced team). SF had three really good players in number 2, 4 & 10. I don't know their names. WCAL's should be fun to watch this year. Mitty had a good game against VC 12-9. Mitty beat SI a week ago.

Menlo beat Bellarmine 8-5 yesterday at Bellarmine. I think the rankings above look about right. IMO, Bellarmine is top of the class of D1 and there is no one really that close, but both SHP and Menlo out of D2 are better than any of the teams in D1. I know this is a broken record, but the D1 and D2 CCS divisions based on school size are really useless and prevent the best teams from facing each other in CCS playoffs.

Bell did not by any means have a good game. Whole team looked flat and didn't see much effort from them. Very sub par effort from them. Congrats to Menlo on a well executed game.

Great effort from Bellarmine in a home game effort against SHP last night that could have landed either way. SHP prevailed 9-8 with a last shot with 11 seconds left to get the win. Bellarmine will get another shot at SHP at the end of October.

The D2 championship game shoulds be the overall CCS championship game between Menlo and SHP. We'll see how Menlo fares against top competition this weekend (including MD) but the match-up against SHP should be very close.
