2018 CIFSS Division 3 Thread

Final: Servite over Santa Barbara

They played a one-goal game at the High School Champs so I’m going to guess they’re up at the top but there’s a lot of decent but potentially flawed teams who could all challenge. Servite has 3 All-CIF players back included Guillermo Ocasio who’s probably the best player in the division. Santa Barbara is always strong and (like Dos Pueblos last year) will likely rise to the top of a lower division. Redondo Union will be there in the end, as well. They have a lot kids back from their CIF D4 title team. Los Osos is always strong. Costa Mesa, South Pasadena and Temple City have a lot of kids back and will be quarterfinal/semifinal players. Peninsula played Redondo tough last year and should be decent.

I like your final game call. I think Servite is going to win this. They really have no business being in D3 this year. Redondo lost 2 of their 3 top players from last year and will struggle in D3 (They went 0-6 against the top 3 auto-qualifiers last season). Peninsula returns their 2 best players, but lose their goalie, who kept them in games last season (i'm not aware of a viable replacement).

I agree, Servite should be the team to beat. I also agree they should of been moved up to Div 1/2. Seven teams moved from Div 3 to Div 1/2 and Servite was top 4 but did not move up.

+1 - Servite is definitely a solid Div 2 team. I know that the CA HS Champs is to the best barometer, but they did have nices win over Santa Barbara and LB Wilson and took Laguna to overtime.

Information I have gathered for Div 3 from the 2017 season. Below are the information of general 2017 play-off team movement in and out of this division for 2018:
- 7 teams moved up to Div 1/2
- 17 teams stayed in this division
- 3 teams moved down to Div 4
- 1 team moved to Div 5
- 2 team (could not fin Arroyo Grande and Righetti in any of the power ranking divisions to place them? Both were in the 2017 Div 3 play-offs)

Still do not know why Servite stayed in Div3, but with their returning CIF performers, they got to be the favorite for Div 3.

Here are info on the Top 10 from the power rankings and to others of note that moved up from Div 4.

2018 Div 3 Boys Power Ranking
1 - Ayala Ruben - Lost in Div 3 Qtr-finals, lost 4 Div 3 All-CIF performers, return zero All-CIF performers, 24-5, 7-1
2 - Northwood - Lost in CIF Div 3 2nd round, Return 1 Div 3 All-CIF performer, 20-11, 5-5
3 - Servite - Lost in CIF Div 3 Semi-finals, Lost 1 Div 3 All-CIF performer, return 3 Div 3 All-CIF performers, 17-10, 2-3
4 - Los Osos - Lost in CIF Div 2 1st round, lost 1 Div 2 All-CIF performer, return zero All-CIF performers, 12-13, 7-1
5 - Santa Barbara - Lost in Di2 Wild card, no CIF Performers, 13-16, 4-4
6 - Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks - Lost in Div 3 1st round, no CIF performers, 16-9, 3-2
7 - Costa Mesa - Lost in CIF Div 3 2nd Round, no CIF performers, 15-13, 3-1
8 - Redondo Union - 2017 CIF Div 4 Champ, lost 3 Div 4 All-CIF performers, return 2 Div 4 All-CIF performers, 18-11, 2-6
9 - San Marcos - Did not participate in Div 2 playoffs, 12-15, 2-5
10 - El Segundo - Lost in CIF Div 3 2nd round, return 1 Div 3 All-CIF performer, 20-7, 7-1

Others of Note:
- Temple City - 2017 Div 4 Semi-finalist, return 3 Div 4 All-CIF performers, lost zero CIF performers, 22-1, 10-0
- South Pasadena - 2017 Div 4 Semi-finalist, return 3 Div 4 All-CIF performers, lost zero CIF performers, 18-10, 8-2
