Unfortunately Ocean View has a tough league. They will have to beat out a D5 team in order to make the playoffs. Paloma and Heritage will most likely end up 2/3 in their league so only one team will make the playoffs unless CIF gives at large for D5 and D6 this year. in 2019 they did not give any at large in those divisions as far as I can tell. In 2019 some top ranked teams in D6 and D7 did not even get to play in the playoffs even though those brackets were full of BYES.

Sorry to analyze your random pics, not the intention. It was more as a reminder that to even make the playoffs the teams must finish in the top half of their league. Some teams like Lompoc (d6) have no hope. they are stuck with 2 d1 schools, 2 D2 schools, 1 D3 and 1 D4. Next year they are moving to CIF central.

Redlands and Crespi, the 2019 finalists, we’re at-large teams who didnt automatically qualify out of their leagues.

And I appreciate your insight and encourage further engagement. These boards can die off quickly so it’s always good to hear from folks.

Ahh, you are right, I was looking at D7 and thought it was interesting that half of the top 10 on the end of year poll did not make the playoffs. Looking at their league results they did not finish with a .500 record so they just left half the bracket open with Byes. a shame they could not figure out how to use power ranking on the fly to fill out the D7 bracket. D7 coaches should be careful who they schedule if they have a tough league I guess. Maybe D7 (now D6) should have a lower requirement to file for an at large bid. maybe .400? .350? All in the name of equity in sport.

Good luck to all the teams, I cannot wait to see who emerges in the first few weeks of the season, hopefully after some scores we will get some engagement on the threads.

Since the advent of power rankings to determine division, coaches in the lower levels need to be more mindful of their schedules.

The reality is that most leagues will have enough higher level teams that those playing D6/7 in those leagues will simply have no chance of being top 3 or 4. When all teams in the league were the same division, there was little reason for scheduling for a .500+ season in order to qualify, but I think coaches are adjusting. If I remember correctly, five of the six D4/5/6 finalists were at-large teams in 2019. Let's see what happens this year.

Crean is looking very tough. I'll pick Crean and Westminster both to advance to the semis with Crean winning there.

Ocean View to advance to the semis along with Heritage and I'll take OV in an upset in the semis.

Division 6 is mostly the non-club kids that you have to teach to swim before you can teach them polo. The top 10-15 programs are the ones with a kid or two with limited club experience. Its unfortunate for most of these teams that a private OC school is passing through as a new program and hammering the rest of the division. Maybe someone will rise up and give them a game?
