2019 JO 16U Boys

Postby IpayBar » Fri Jun 14, 2019 5:59 pm

Anyone have top 10 for this age group?

1 CCU
2 TROJAN
3 SOCAL
4 ROSEBOWL
5 SD SHORE
6 PATRIOT - not sure where these guys fit in
7 STANFORD
8 VANGUARD
9 LAMO
10 LA PREMIER

Bubble teams: PV, DEL MAR, OCWPC, ORWP, SHORE

depending on routes and matchups I think my top nine are pretty rock solid finishing in top 10.

7 ROSEBOWL
8 PATRIOT
9 LAMO
10 LA PREMIER

I think 1-5 could win it (or play in the finals). I'd be surprised if 4 of those 5 teams are not in the semis.

CCU going to be tough to beat. I’ll take it against the field.

Interesting the divergence of opinion as to one of those listed teams.

I’d put CCU and SoCal in the same class, assuming they both are playing everyone down. Rose Bowl, Trojan, Vanguard, Patriot and SD Shore all likely fighting for 3rd.

Based upon the results from this weekend COMMERCE INTERNATIONAL tournament
I would estimate these results

1 CCU
2 VANGUARD
3 TROJAN
4 LA JOLLA UNITED
5 STANFORD
6 SOCAL
7 LA PREMIER
8 SD SHORE
9 PATRIOT
10 LAMO

Just my observation but it looked liked many of the 16u teams were playing up to 18u black at Commerce and 14u teams playing up to 16u black.

You're going against the grain, topten, picking SOCAL to finish this low and La Jolla United this high. I hope you're not basing these selections solely on the results of last weekend's Commerce International tournament. Several of the teams entered in this tournament were "B" teams, including SOCAL Gold, and there was even a 14u team entered in the tournament. At this point, it looks like SOCAL Black and CCU are the teams to beat. I didn't see all of CCU's games last weekend and they were playing without one of their national team players, but they are going to have to play better to win the gold medal. I give the edge to SOCAL if Guillermo Ocasio plays on the 16u team. I think he will be the difference maker.

I want to reshuffle my picks slightly

1 CCU
2 SOCAL
3 STANFORD
4 TROJAN
5 VANGUARD
6 SD SHORE
7 PATRIOT - not sure where these guys fit in
8 ROSEBOWL
9 LAMO
10 LA PREMIER

I think this top 5 is pretty legit. The next 6 to 10 are good teams as well. Del Mar might sneak out a top 10 spot. La Jolla United not on the radar IMO.

Tell us the secret of your La Jolla United landing in your #5 spot. Ahead of SD SHORE and ahead of a pretty good 16U Del Mar club. I guess we'll all find out this weekend for qualifying in PSW

I would agree with Jeff. With Guillermo they would be tough to beat. He is a beast inside and on his way to UCLA. I have seen him play since he was 11 and he was good then.

Concur on SoCal’s 16u, which has dominated their ‘up’ year since they were 12. They are fun to watch. The dissolve of the 680 16u team boosts CCU. Vanguard is always tough. They are the top tier.

1. SoCal
2. CCU
3. Vanguard

Second tier is interesting with the performance of Stanford, which played CCU very close in the quals, and Trojan which looks really improved from two years ago.

Del Mar did really well in futures. This weekend will sort out a lot in San Diego, because traditionally SD Shores has been the lone top ten team in this age group as they’ve aged up.

Gold : Socal vs. CCU
Bronze : Trojan vs. Stanford
5-7 : LB Shore, Rose Bowl and LA Premiere
8-10 : Vanguard, SD Shores, Del Mar

Socal and CCU are head and shoulders above the field. It is a toss-up between those two for gold. Trojan has a deep team that has dominated the Futures League. 5 to 7 spots are a toss-up between three Coastal Zone teams. LA Premiere is the wild card. It all depends on who plays on the team or if they send a team at all. Last year they skipped JO's after winning Coastal Zone. Rose Bowl is a solid team with awesome lefty attackers. My dark horse is the well coached and very disciplined LB Shore team. They are a fast team with two dominant giants in the middle.

Will be interesting to see how Vanguard does with this team. They were runner up during their "up" year in 14u and 12u to SoCal (and won it at 10u) as SoCal and Vanguard were the clear top two teams throughout both those years. But this is not the same team. If you look back at their 14u up year in 2017, only three of their starting field players are on this 16u team, with the others gone to other programs or no longer playing polo. They still have some very good players on this team, but they haven't played together as a 16u team all year (3-4 of them have been starters on the 18u team all season and 4-5 have been subs on the 18u team). Vanguard did the same thing last year by playing a 16u team in JOs that had essentially not played together as a 16u team all year, and they finished 11th. Similar to last year, this team also doesn't have much size. I suspect they are still very good and would be very surprised if they don't end up in the top 10, but I don't think they have the size or depth to be in the same tier as SoCal or CCU.

Ocasio was the difference for SoCal in 14u and 12u as no team had an answer for him, but I think CCU is bigger and deeper now. I will certainly try to make that match-up when it happens at JOs.

Not sure who was or wasn't missing, but I think Del Mar 16s and La Jolla 16s played each other twice at San Diego cup this year and split the two games. Not saying that makes them a top 5 team, but seems like they might be pretty good. Guess we might see with their qual results this week.
