Postby newtothisgame » Wed Sep 18, 2019 3:08 pm

Now that the girls are back with the Santa Margarita League Night games and not to jump the gun, but I would like to get opinions on the upcoming season.

Off the top of my head, here is my top 10:

1. Foothill
2. Laguna Beach
3. Santa Margarita
4. Orange Lutheran
5. CDM
6. San Marcos
7. Mater Dei
8. Newport Harbor
9. Dos Pueblos
10. San Clemente

Thoughts? Who did I overlook?

Heard that Laguna's starting center is jumping to USC at the end of this semester and will be playing for them in the spring. Can anyone confirm that she will be unavailable to Laguna for the 2019 season?

Not their center, but one of their incoming seniors is supposedly bypassing her senior year at Laguna and enrolling at USC early.

Their outstanding center is an incoming junior.

I would suppose the strength of schedule is no lover of former #1 teams. Maybe it’s more difficult to maintain a high ranking if you aren’t blowing every one out? The power rankings don’t seem to be overly biased.

Hopefully, this is a Div 1/2 discussion thread.

2019-2020 Girls Water Polo
Div 1/2
Summary of what I see returning in Div 1/2 for the 2019-20 season (does not take into consideration transfers or freshman). If you look at the number of teams in the top 10 Power Ranking that return 3 or more ALL-CIF players there are 5 teams and when you add to that the Other teams I mention that is another 7 teams. So in total there are 12 teams in Div 1/2 that return 3 or more ALL-CIF performers, pretty amazing and makes for some tough teams to compete against. Favorites got to be Laguna Beach and Foothill, but there are a lot of very good teams in the hunt. Should be a very competitive and amazing season for Div 1/2. As a note, team records are not totally accurate on the CIF SS site or MaxPreps, so it is sometimes difficult to determine a team's overall record unfortunately now without a lot of effort.
1 Laguna Beach 22.14032 - 2019 Div 1 Champion, (31-2), (6-0), Return 5 Div 1 All-CIF performers, lost 2 Div 1 All-CIF Performers (5 SR's lost)

2 Corona Del Mar 20.5307149 - 2019 Div 1 Finalist, (20-8), (4-2), Return 3 Div 1 All-CIF performers (GK), lost 4 Div 1 All-CIF performers (8 SR's lost)

3 Dos Pueblos 20.37093752 - 2019 Div 1 5th Place, (24-9), (5-0), Return 2 Div 1 All-CIF performers, lost 3 All-CIF performers

4 Lutheran Orange 20.08428 - 2019 Div 1 3rd Place, (25-8), (3-1), Return 2 All-CIF Performers, lost 4 Div 1 All-CIF performers

5 Foothill Santa Ana 19.27210324 - 2019 Div 1 4th Place, (22-9), (3-0), Return 5 Div 1 All-CIF performers, lost 0 Div 1 All-CIF performers

6 Santa Margarita 18.56565782 - 2019 Div 2 champion, (19-9), (3-1), Return 5 Div 2 ALL-CIF performers, lost 2 Div 2 All-CIF performers (2 SR's lost

7 San Marcos 17.7002045 - 2019 Div 1 6th Place, (20-13), (3-2), Return 3 Div 1 All-CIF performers, lost 1 Div 1 All-CIF performers

8 Mater Dei 17.60619344 - 2019 Div 1 8th Place, (17-11), (3-1), Return 2 Div 1 All-CIF performers, lost 1 Div 1 All-CIF performer

9 Los Alamitos 17.33914812 - (13-14), (0-6), Did not participate in 2019 play-offs (sub .500 record), a young team

10 Newport Harbor 17.32306026 - 2019 Div 1 7th Place, (16-13), (2-4), Return 2 Div 1 All-CIF performers, lost 3 Div 1 All-CIF performers

There are 25 teams listed in Div 1/2, one more than the 24 teams in the 2018-19 season. 4 new teams moved up and 3 teams dropped down.

It looks like some of the teams from the tough Surf League don't want to get in the position that Los Alamitos got into last year with having a sub .500 record. Santa Margarita had Los Alamitos, Newport and CDM on their early schedule, but now it seems all 3 have cancelled their games with SM. Makes you think. SM now will play in 4 tournaments to make up for the games.

Interesting. Where are you accessing the schedules at?

Teams in the tough Surf League are in a difficult position. Having Laguna, CDM, Newport and Los Al all in the same league, it is likely that one of those teams could go 0-6, as happened last year. That is a difficult hole to dig yourself out of, especially if you are playing in all of the top tournaments. Los Al has a very good team and it was a shame that they did not get to compete for a D2 title last year.

The schedules are not out yet, but in a discussion with the SM coach he mentioned he has to play 4 tournaments and some parents asked why 4 tournaments and he remarked about the LA, NP and CDM games being off the initial schedule,
