Fall Mens Predictions

Postby Starbucks » Thu Jul 09, 2009 5:07 am

Based on this
http://collegiatewaterpolo.com/news/200 ... nouncement
any predictions on who will win what division?

My questions -
1. Will Mich St be back in the championship game for the 5th time in a row?
2. Will anybody in the Pacific Coast trump Cal Poly?
3. Will Arizona / Arizona St still rumble in the desert?
4. Will Florida intl reclaim the Florida title back from UF?

How are you connected to water polo?: I am the organizer behind the Ohio Squirrels Water Polo club which is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. We play/travel year round.

I officiate high school water polo in Cincinnati.

1. MSU is going to be slightly down this year, but not down enough to NOT make it to Nationals. I do not think they will be back in the finals. I predict top 4 finish though.
2. Cal Poly will be back in the finals. They have a lot of returning players.
3. Yes
4. Florida Intl has a lot of potential to do this. UF seems like a small program that has potential to fall apart.

Squirrels, I would have to agree with you. Looking at the poll on the CWPA website right now -
"Which team should be No. 1 in the Men's Club Preseason Poll? A) Michigan St, B) Cal Poly, C) Arizona St, D) Another team"

My vote would have to go to Cal Poly right now. Cal Poly only lost Harris, whereas MSU lost Perry & Haga. MSU has the better coaching, but Cal Poly has the depth, better goalkeeper and advantage & experience of being in the toughest CWPA division. I think there are other teams in this division that if they won division, could probably win nationals and give MSU a run for their money.

Last year ASU had Betsey Armstrong & some grad students, so who knows how strong they really are. Arizona is prob the favored team. Im interested to see how Lindenwood does this year at nationals (if they make it). They've won the DIII nationals the past 2 years, and apparently are going to the open nationals if they qualify. They have a bunch of games scheduled against varsity teams, so it will be interested to see if they make the championship game, although they have a tough draw.

Commentary - PSU makes it to #2 with pre-season wins over Michigan (then #11), Illinois (then unranked) and Grand Valley State (then #6), ASU (then #2T) rises to #1, but Arizona (then #8) falls to #9 despite losing in overtime. Cal Poly hasn't played anybody yet (only started school today) & drops to #3.

Despite no MSU, the Davis Tourny should correct the rankings to some extent. I expect #9 Arizona over #7 Florida, #17 CAL over #4 Florida INTL, #RV UC Davis over #18 Utah on the opening day to stir up the rankings. I expect Mich St. to go 4-0 and try redeem themselves. Big climbers after this wknd will be UC Davis & CAL with Florida Intl & Florida dropping. Texas will also fall as too should Utah. I don't expect the pollsters to correct their PSU experiment, but instead we will prob see Michigan & MSU rise.

Opening Day on Friday for the Cal Maritime program!

Adam Donovan, tournament director, e-mailed there is no website with schedule/results; resource constraints.

Go Keelhaulers!

Like I said - this tournament should rectify the rankings a bit. Surprises to me were Utah, ASU & Cal Poly. I expected ASU to fall, but not Cal Poly. Utah surprised everybody. Overall I think this in anybody's year, since there was no clear dominant team.
