Rustler poloists fall to AP #1 Trojans
October 5, 2011
By Jeane Parel
Western Sun staff writer

The Golden West men’s water polo team fell short in a close exhibition game against the Associated Press no. 1 ranked USC Trojans on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Rustlers lost to the Trojans, 10-8.

Golden West kept it tight in the first quarter but slipped four goals behind by the end of the third. The Rustlers refused to remain silent as David Jorth defended his team with a steal while goalie, Taylor Lapin, came up with two very much-needed saves in the second half.

The Rustlers worked to close the four-point gap built by the Trojans with second half goals from Kevin Oliveira, Luca De Vivo, and Bero Rusz. Despite gaining five points in the second half, GWC still finished two goals behind USC at the end of the game.

“When you play against better players it exposes your weaknesses so it was a great opportunity for our kids to go up there and play,” head coach Scott Taylor said. “They did the best they could and we’re able to come back and learn from all the mistakes they made.”

In his 10th season as head coach, Taylor has brought the Rustlers three state championships, nine Southern California championships and nine conference titles.

Although last weekend’s loss does not count toward GWC’s record, Taylor thought it was a good experience for the team to be able to play against the highest level of college athletes. His team has no choice but to rise to the challenge. “They get to see what they have to do here at Golden West to make it there.” {my emphasis}

The green and gold will take their learned lessons and take on the University of the Pacific at 12 p.m. and Sierra at 1:30 p.m. both this Friday at Pacific’s pool.

Note: Golden West is also scheduled to play West Valley & Cal "B" this weekend, and Concordia, Cal Baptist & UCSB next weekend. http://www.gwcathletics.com/mens-sports ... e-results/

I don't know, I wasn't there. Was anyone there who could comment?

According to USC"s recap on their website, here is the goals by quarter breakdown:
http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-wpol ... 11aab.html
USC 10, Golden West 8
USC 3 - 4 - 3 - 0 = 10
GW 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 = 8
SCORING:
USC -- Jeremy Davie 2, Connor Virjee 2, Kosta Genidounias 2, Ivan Kustic 2, Marc Vonderwiedt, Jack Plaga.
GW -- Bero Rusz 2, Marko Madaras 2, Kevin Oliveira 2, Ricardo Guimaraes, Luca De Vivo.
SAVES: Ely Bonilla (USC) 5, Will Simon (USC) 3, Taylor Lapin (GW) 5.

USC's 2011 statistics:
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/usc ... _stats.pdf
USC's starting goalie did not play, it looks like. All of the USC players listed in the box score have scored at least 1 goal prior to this game, but since there's no statistic listed for "playing time", there's no reliable way to determine who played & how much. For example, Genidounias is USC's 2nd leading scorer, but it doesn't say how much he played.

My main point in bringing it up was that I admire Coach Taylor's attitude, that he thinks it is important to play against the next level, so the JC student-athletes know what it takes to play at that level, and think about what they must do if they wish to transfer & continue their scholastic & athletic career at whatever school they are interested in.
