USA Women beat Netherlands in 12-11
You would not know it from the website or the FB page, but our women's team played the Netherlands in an exhibition today as their last tune up before the Fina World League Tournament. Stats here https://output.6-8sports.com/
.
US was up big early, and up 11-8 at the end of the third, but Netherlands made it a game in the 4th. If anyone finds recorded video, please share. USA Water Polo probably won't.

Team announcement for FINA. Some BIG names not participating, taking a break. Youth in the Field will be driving this bus.

To be fair, the Netherlands were also missing some key players- five, to be exact: four playing in Spain and one more playing in Greece.

I watched the last 3 quarters. Weird game. US was up 5-2 after 1. Italy outscored them 6-3 in the second and third to tie, then took a one goal lead early in the fourth before the US pulled back ahead. US looked pretty dominant the last several possessions in the fourth, once they had the 1 goal lead, but defense was pretty shaky there for a while. Hungary in the semifinals
I watched part of the Spain-Hungary game, and the Spanish looked really strong. If the US gets past Hungary, I don't they'll will beat Spain if they don't put together 4 strong quarters--which seemed to be a problem in their games with Netherlands and Italy.
Playing like a team with a lot of young players--which is of course what they are.

I think your information is off here. Yes they were missing some players but I don't think 5 is accurate. Can you name the 5 players who didn't play for the Dutch team?

I think it was very clear that I wrote about the exhibition game at the end of October, right before the tournament. My message was posted on October 29th, before the World League tournament started and the title of the thread is "USA Women beat Netherlands in 12-11"- right?
Afaik, the Spanish legionaries (Sevenich, van de Kraats, Bosbeld and Ten Droek) joined the Dutch team in Santa Cruz. They did not play in Holland. Also, a Greek league player (Iris Wolves) did not play at that exhibition game as well. All five played for the Netherlands in their 6-9 loss to the USA at Santa Cruz. And they did not play at Utrecht on October 28th.

USA will play Netherlands, for the third time in nine days, in the bronze medals game after losing to Hungary 9:10 in a semifinal. We have a young and very talented team and the loss should not be overdramatized. At full strength, USA still has the strongest team in the world. But the competitors are getting closer, imho.
In the gold medals game, Spain are probably the favorites.

They were missing a lot of familiar names, but still a tough loss for the US women.
When is the last time that they have not won gold at a tournament?

USA lost to China, in China, in a semifinal of the 2013 World League and finished 3rd there.

Who were we missing, who will likely be on the team for the next Olympic cycle?

Steffens, Musselman, Gilchrist and Haralabidis. Steffens is the all time Olympic scorer and GOAT, and my opinion is that Musselman can take that scoring spot if she stays healthy for the duration of her career. Having lefty Haralabidis also has a tremendous arm combined with the leadership experience of Gilchrist would as Limey puts it; USA still has the strongest team. Talent pool is still deep despite this loss (part of the growing pains) to Hungary. And can't forget the Gold Medal team lost early in the Olympics to Hungary
